End Of 2012

So that's another year in Eve Online is almost done.

Taking a break for a week or so.

In game and out.

Edit - Introducing a posting schedule and some more fiction in the New Year which fills me quite full of terror.

Mystery Late DT

On the 20th CCP pushed Downtime (DT) back by an hour after cancelling the first attempt the night before.

This coincided with the second round of Christmas gifts which seemed to consist of a less common ship, some random stuff and a few playing cards.

Sort of interesting I guess.

Getting back to the late DT.  No real explanation has been given for the new time after all these years but the hope, most probably a very faint hope, that DT will be moved away from my prime time.

NIMBY I suppose.

One more gift date is incoming, late in the month.

It's better than nothing.

Almost But Not Quite

A little thrill of excitement pulsed through my core as CCP announced tonights Downtime (DT) would be delayed by an hour but not go longer than the typical half hour.

Which these days is often less than ten minutes anyway.

DT lands right in the middle of our prime gaming time zone in the land "Down Under".

We are the land of "Shrimp on the Barbie".

Well it's actually Prawns and it only started becoming common after the Paul Hogan advert from many years ago.

We also "drink" Fosters beer.

Well ... no.  This is another advertising thing.  We don't drink Fosters.  I don't know anybody who drinks Fosters.  Fosters is something we make the rest of the world drink after we've filtered it through Wombats (interesting fact, they have cubic poo), and dribbled it into cans to export to the world.

Mind you I live in a state where they thought the word "Beer" would be too much of a stretch for the average drinker and decided that "XXXX" would make more sense.

They were totally right.

However, and trying desperately to arrive back in topic here, I decided to visit the Eve Online web site and sure enough...

"Due to database issues experienced today on the 18th of December, we will not be pushing the downtime back by one hour on Wednesday the 19th of December.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding."

Aaaargh CCP why do you hate Australians so?

Push it back by a few hours permanantly, or even into the Kiwi timezone, they only have about a half dozen people and a billion sheep, we they won't care!

December Update

It's difficult to know what to post about at the moment.

The latest patch update expansion (Retribution) seems to have been a success, especially the bounty system.

War declarations have been massaged to stop the eternal wars, new ships are now available with names that take some getting used to when seen in the overview.

Downtime (DT) is still annoying, especially the almost nightly long DT's that followed Retribution, as it impacted heavily on my prime time zone for internet space ships.

Ganking still seems to be happening, neutral repping the same.

The freezing in carbonite (mixing franchises for the twitches) of Walking In Stations is rather depressing, mostly as this will miss targeting a brand new Eve Online audience.  It would have also been cool to stand around with the corp mates while chatting, but that doesn't actually add much to the game play.

Planetside 2 has stolen the thunder of DUST514, both on the SONY console regrettably.  With the current glut of console shooters, Planetside 2 out dusting DUST514 with the kiddies I'm struggling to see how DUST514 it will be relevant upon eventual release.

I would like to be proven wrong but I think DUST514's life will be short and ugly.

Not forgetting the new consoles are due out in 2013 which given the pace of the DUST514 release schedule means the new SONY console will be out several years before a general non-beta DUST514 release.

Probably joking.

Might not be.

My characters are healthy, ie. they all have a task and are doing it well enough.

The corporation is also healthy, as is the alliance.

We are changing alliances though, going back to one we were in a while ago.

Checking out the velvet glove of a previous hot girlfriend as it were.

Hoping she hasn't had too many kids yet.

It should be a good move, I hope it is.

I found something to write about after all.

Go me.

MMO's Die

All MMO's will die, eventually.

It is most likely that one day Eve Online will be switched off and "die".

This can be a sad and sometimes traumatic event for the people still enjoying themselves in the virtual world they've made their own.

Recently GameSpy was bought by a company called Glu who have then proceeded to switch off the multi player aspect of numerous games.

http://www.ausgamers.com/news/read/3260340/gamespys-new-owners-switch-off-old-games-multiplayer-without-warning

Their facebook page seems to be never ending vertical misery and rage.

https://www.facebook.com/gamespytech

With luck this fate will not befall Eve Online, I don't think it will in the short to medium term.  DUST514 I'm not so sure about.  I hope I'm not longer involved in the struggles of New Eden when the seemingly inevitable shutdown happens, many years in the future.

So why bother now?

It's an enjoyable way to pass the time that far surpasses many of the other options available.

The King may eventually die but long live the King!

WiS is Dead

CCP seem to have confirmed Walking In Stations is now dead in the water with no rescue and resuscitation likely in the foreseeable future.

Here and here.

While it's a shame, the reasons are sound however it will make gathering new players more difficult if "internet spaceships" are not their primary interest.

I wouldn't expect this feature to be available for at least two years, four years wouldn't surprise me either.

So don't hold your breath.

Elite Sequel May Not Be A Turd

Recently in wham-bam-thank-you-maam I mentioned the possibility of another Elite sequel from David Braben.

Well from the wonder that is the internet we now have a video.

Hmmm it looks interesting, though quite early days.

David chatting away also mentions some options for PVP which seem pretty elegant from treating it like a single player game, a closed PVP universe and an open FFA one.

Again, quite interesting.

Wham, Bam, Thank You Ma'am!

How time flies!  I have a heap of browser tabs lined up to comment on so don't expect well thought out responses or War and Peace length.

Right first up we have:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20165344

Yes that's right David Braben, yes THAT David Braben of Elite fame is looking to utilise the massive future fraud tool wonderful device that is Kickstarter to fund a sequel to Elite.  Well David we've had a sequel or two from you, they were buggy pieces of shit in the extreme, we now have Eve Online, give it up and design a space ship for CCP or something.

Your work with the Raspberry PI is appreciated though.

Next!

CCP have found some time to gather many but probably not all of the changes due on the 4th of December (2012 for those reading from the future).

http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=73572

It's starting to look like they may be able to create a silk purse from a sows ear after all, however many ship balance changes at once are a worry.

Spin, spin, spin the OP ship wheel, hope you're a winner!

Next!

Forum posts are generally terrible with trolls trying to troll trolls who are trolling the trolls back with trolling glee, but one post caught my eye, something I'd been banging on about for a while.

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=173443&find=unread

Dynamic Security Status of some description.  Yes good idea, do this.

Next!

http://www.vg247.com/2012/11/10/dust-514-and-eve-onlines-worlds-are-going-to-be-connected-slowly-says-ccp/

Well no shit as CCP does everything slowly, except when they don't and it's rubbish.

I'm looking at you AURUM, expensive monocle and Walking In Stations.

Everything about DUST514 is happening slowly, it won't be in full release until the PS5 is available at this rate.

GET IT DONE!

Oh and future people, you still don't have flying cars as the drivers are the problem, not the cars, and sorry we still haven't done anything useful to combat whatever it is you're pissed off at us about.

DUST514 Delayed

Originally expected to launch in late 2012, CCP Games' PlayStation 3 exclusive Eve Online first person shooter spin-off will be (unsurprisingly) extending its closed beta period through until 2013, according to a report on Eurogamer:

"Things are going well," CCP Games exec David Reid said. "We'll be in closed beta through the end of 2012, but it won't take much longer. With a bet this big you want to get things right."

Eurogamer's Dust 514 preview, written in August, found the game "unsteady" with "a lot of work" still needing to be done.

Reid said these criticisms merely showed the game was still in a "real beta" phase.

"You should expect to see some rough edges, some things not working so well," he said. "Other recent console betas have tended to be working launch demos. We're doing something unprecedented here, and we want to get everything right before we join those two worlds."

This will push DUST514 very close to the big gaming conventions of 2013 and the expected displaying of the new Xbox and Playstation consoles.

However this will also move the release away from the typical Christmas AAA titles like Halo 4 etc etc, which is probably a good thing.

The SS Blues

A while ago in Eve Online game time I manufactured ships amongst other things, namely T2 ships.  Now for one reason or another I stopped doing this, put drop sheets over everything in the hanger and left for null sec, only returning every second week or when I wanted to.

Recently, today in fact, so quite recently then, I decided to revisit my T2 production line to see if it would be profitable enough to start up again.  The figures looked good on the market but I had to check the costs were correct as those pesky folks at CCP are happy to muck about from time to time with the "ingredients".

After some searching I found a spreadsheet which seemed to suggest it was used for some sort of T2 production, opened it and was fairly baffled by what appeared.

Now in Eve Online we often have to use spreadsheets for a variety of tasks, sometimes created by ourselves and sometimes "obtained" from others and co-opted for our own nefarious means.

I was getting fairly frustrated with this one and started cursing the creator, which after checking who made it found out it was one of mine.

Right then...okay.

So the first task was to figure out if it was still correct, as I hadn't touched it since December 2011.  The amount of materials required was a little out, and the costs were well out as inflation has descended upon New Eden pretty harshly in the past twelve months. Essentially the document was sound, I figured out what did what and added some better descriptions so a post with a large similarity to this one doesn't have to be written in twenty four months time.

One of the issues I now have is the frailty of freighters.  Ten destroyers worth four fifths of fuck all can destroy one, taking more than one billion plus the cargo from your assets list with a howl that most certainly disturbs the people down the street in number forty seven.

The Orca is an option as it can be tanked and the trick with a 100MN Afterburner reduces the waiting time to warp, but the cargo hold is small in comparison.

What I'd like to see is a freighter that can tank, but is rather expensive, as a counter against a dozen ten day old alts destroying the hauling trade in Eve Online.

It would be adequate if this was before Christmas but any time this year is fine.

Red vs Blue

I threw an unused character into the endless Eve Online conflict known as Red vs Blue (RvB).

I created her a while ago to experience the new player journey, just one week before CCP changed it all, hence why I haven't written about it here.  However I quite liked the name and look so she still exists.

RvB is in constant battle.  Last time I checked "we" were in more than a dozen wars and fights can be had at any time.  The types of fights are very different though.

The first are the organised pure Red versus Blue ones organised in and around their Headquarters.  Getting kills in these is not a problem, neither is getting killed, but the emptiness of it all leaves a hollow feeling in my stomach.

My heart does not race and I care little about the result.

It's fairly pointless.

The second type are the wars against other corps which provide more excitement as these guys often don't want to lose their ships and the stakes are higher.  As my character started off with minimal skill points I've not been able to make much of a mark against these flyers as yet, typically they have higher skill points than a disposable "scrub" thrown into the RvB melee, but this is by far the more interesting of the two types of fights.

From what I can see the RvB concept seems to be some sort of solution to the waiting in station and/or "blue balling" that has infected null sec warfare of late.

Could just be our null sec warfare though.

Is RvB worth the trouble?

Sure it is, as an aside to the main game.

I'm quite sure doing it 23.5/7 would be soul destroying in the long term.

Then again plenty of pilots in the Eve Online universe have never stepped out of high sec and don't know any better.

When In Doubt, Blow 'em Up!

This is never more true than in Eve Online as often a fight is determined by who can shoot first if the ships are evenly matched.

It also reminds me of a time when we had a new guy in the corp.  As so often with outsiders you give them the dangerous assignments, this is no different, we gave him the scout job as we explored worm holes.

Back then worm holes were new and mysterious with much to be learnt about them, of course these days they're an accepted part of the Eve universe.

I scanned a worm hole out, we warped to it and I directed the scout to enter and tell me if any ships are on the other side.

Initially he said nothing, even after prompting from me, then he said a ship was next to him.

I asked him to tell me what type of ship and leave the worm hole.

However he had moved away from the exit and the ship had him webbed and scrammed.

Soon afterwards his ship was destroyed and then his pod.

Welcome to Eve Online!

In this example trying to blow up the aggressor would not have worked.

So the other adage would be true.

When in doubt, hide and provide information to those that can fight.

Tin Foil Hats for Everybody!

To make a killing as an alliance you could do the following.

Cheaply build hundreds if not thousands of ships that are not currently used as part of "Doctrine" and move them surreptitiously to your current or future staging area.

I say future staging area as you've already organised with the opposition which systems are the next and subsequent battlegrounds.

The alliance of course fit these ships and put them up on contract for a higher than normal price, but these are the officially fitted "Doctrine" ships so BUY THEM NOW.

Then your current fleet ships are "retired" and the new fleet "Doctrine" is advertised.

The hordes of sheeple in your juggernaut rush to buy these fitted "official" ships before they run out as a Call To Arms (CTA) fleet is leaving in half an hour.

By a remarkable coincidence this fleet requires the new ships.

Having previously organised with the bad guys what your fleet composition will be the majority of your fleet is wiped out by the "lucky" coincidence the bad guys turned up with a better composition.

Rinse and repeat a few times.

Profit.

Though of course this would never happen in my Eve.

Dust in my Eve

Looking through my jump clones, find the one I don't need, destroy it.

Consider what I've done for a bit and realise that was the wrong clone, no implants, but annoying to re-create.

Later on, after last nights patch which added amongst other things some more DUST514 integration, I looked at a couple of temperate planets in high security space to see the new districts.  I also wanted to check out how many DUST514 players were in local.

Of course their were none as they are still on a different server.

Fatigue you strike again!

Seriously though seeing the first clear addition of DUST514 content to Eve Online is pretty cool, even though the "dusties" are playing somewhere else at the moment.

The Eve Online update due December 4th 2012 is shaping up as an interesting one, have a look at the Retribution page on the Eve Online web site for more information.  At some stage I'll probably, maybe, talk about it some more but for the moment have a look and a considered think.

My corp activity has been picking up again which is awesome.  To make moving ships easier a new JB link has been created between ( not telling ) and ( not telling ) which saves much jumping and heartache.

Anyway just a quick post, have to get back to the fight and help the bad guys triumph over the good.

Hey that's not right...

Text Mode

The other day I was updating a game that isn't Eve Online (they exist!), it was a large update so I decided to do some stuff in Eve while I was waiting.

For some reason the updating game effected the graphics of Eve, I have all the text but no station or space graphics.  As the update was going to take a while, and Eve looked usable enough, I went about my business.

This involved travelling from station to station in high sec moving some Planetary Interaction (PI) stuff.

It occurred to me pretty soon the pretty space graphics are not required to play the game, they certainly add "something", but the game functions quite happily without them.

Once the other game had finished updating the graphics in Eve started working fine again.  Did I then turn my settings down to low across the board?

No.

While the space graphics are not required they certainly make the game a total package, plus trying to sell Eve Online to a new user with only text to watch would be an exercise in futility.

Retribution

CCP have announced that the 4th of December will be the date of the next expansion known as Retribution.  They have an official page up with little information but linked below is an article from Massively which explains more.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/29/ccp-unveils-eve-online-retribution-coming-this-winter/

I'll comment about it later on but always have to laugh about it being a "Winter" expansion as by the 4th of December it'll be damn hot here!

Stormy Times

The storms were closing in and reliable power was becoming a luxury.  I had the weather RADAR image refreshing from the Bureau of Meteorology every ten minutes, the fastest it can and watched the rain front approach from the south west.

This was the first storm front in many months and after only receiving a millimetre or two of rain for the whole  month the rain would be welcome.

In game I'd finally received the IP details for the chat server after weeks of asking, maybe somebody noticed my null sec downsizing?  This meant I was finally able to login to voice chat and go on roams, though this was slightly difficult as all but one or two ships has been stripped of fittings and left with just rigs.  I resisted the urge a couple of nights prior to just sell them all and move on, that offer from the people in the "Boystin Pocket" was intriguing and gnawing away somewhere in the grey matter.

Sitting in a system a fair distance from the front line, the previous day I had torn down my null sec PI installation as sales were sporadic, the call goes out for a roam or camp.

I have comms again so in theory this is something I could do, also being healthy again and not exhausted was a bonus.  Quickly I looked through the roster of ships available and settled on a Gallente assault frigate, fitted it and made my way towards the target system.

Outside, out of game, the thunder was rumbling and lightning flashed from time to time.  The lights still flickered but putting faith in my UPS, which all the important gear was hooked up to, I hoped it would all be okay.  Then of course, perhaps I was more tired than I thought, my realisation that the UPS had failed and died earlier in the year.  It had yet to be replaced.  Once more I looked at the RADAR images.  The front was close, with more behind it, but the rain was losing intensity, it had yet to reach us.

Back in game I reached the target system, having joined the fleet en route, and commenced the camp.  We caught nothing of consequence before DT, and nothing afterwards, but being able to reconnect with the corp was worthwhile after a difficult three months in the real world.

The storm front passed over us that night bringing little rain.  Subsequent days would also promise much and deliver little.

We are still waiting for decent rain.

Boat Foot Mouth

It would appear the in game character, and Goonswarm FC known as Da Big Red Boat (DBRB) has been a dick head* again.

Not sure if dick head is one word or two.  I'll go with two for emphasis.

DBRB is easily the most outspoken of the Goon FC's and some blue will either not join his fleets or leave if he takes them over because of past behaviour in fleet chat and Teamspeak.

"(9:35:03 PM) directorbot@goonfleet.com/directorbot: Attn: Elo Knight of black legion and Super twinkey of Nc.DOT have decided to be bitches of the highest order. They used last night, time we all spent grieving and :smith:ing over vilerat to shoot our structures and taunt us in local. Tonight IRC has called a level 4 cta, the highest possible and nc.dot and elo are telling their people they must show up. They think we will be too busy crying and sad to fight them and they are trying to abuse our friends death

SHOW UP TONIGHT IN A SUBCAPITAL, SLOWCAT, SUPER CAPITAL, IBIS. Show these fucking bitches that its not cool to use vilerat’s surprising death as a strategic objective and goal.

Subcaps are forming at 0300eve, we will be using drakes, tengus, tornados or other ships I call for. Be in umi with multipul ships. See you tonight.

*** This was a broadcast from dabigredboat to all-all, replies are not monitored ***"

It's stunning to see him screw up again and again.

Vile Rat

Recently it was reported by the worlds media that a citizen of the United States lost his life in an attack on their embassy in Libya, a country that is emerging from a civil war.

Later reports have updated this to several citizens including the ambassador.

One of the people killed appears to be an Eve Online player called Vile Rat in game or Sean Smith outside of it.

Unfortunately the news that this person was Vile Rat came from the news desk of Goonswarm so a large amount of disbelief must be reserved until more reputable sources, using independent reporting, supply us with the information.

It would seem however that the news is true and the person known in game as Vile Rat has been killed in Libya.

Real world events don't often intrude into the Eve Online universe.  The most recent example I can remember is The Mittani's rant which ended up with his in game suspension.

Obviously this is a very sad event for all those involved.

Vile Rate was the number two man in the Goonswarm leadership.  It's hard to see how this can change the day to day operations of Goonswarm as they are decentralised.

However the long term prospects are more unclear as Vile Rat could have provided the brains and strategic long term planning that an impotent figure head like Mittens cannot do.

If I had to put some money down I'd say his loss will be mourned and it will be business as usual after a week or two at Goonswarm.

Flailing at the Wind

Sure Eve Online has sexism, racism, anti-semitism, and many other things that end with -ism but I'd be surprised if you could find a MMO out there which didn't.

It's a reflection of the online culture and our times, people have frustrations and the anonimity (often an illusion of) they feel lets them express themselves in ways that many other find offensive.

Is this behaviour correct?

Hell no, but good luck stopping it.

Ban it from the forums. They'll use unofficial forums making your own a ghost town.

Ban certain terms "in game".  Then work around words will be used, assuming you don't drown in false positives.

Police voice chat?  Yeah good luck with that.

Essentially the only useful thing to do is don't hang around with arseholes, or better yet shoot them in the face.

In game of course.

Evemon Development Ending?

It would seem the current developer of Evemon, the popular third party tool used by players of Eve Online may be calling it quits.

He writes,

"My absence is estimated to last for at least a month with the possibility of it lasting more than that or even being permanent."

With luck he'll be at it again soon but considering the amount of time already spent I wouldn't be surprised to see him call it a day and walk away.

Eve Bay

An in game character by the name of Trade King has created an out of game auction site for in game Eve Online items.

Makes sense?

It could be legit or it could be a scam, you be the judge.

At this stage it looks pretty basic but is functional.

Eve on a Time Budget

For various reasons I've not had much time to Eve Online lately.

So what I've been doing is "ninja" Eve Online, that is doing the maximum possible with limited time.

Firstly I've kept the Planetary Interaction (PI) going across the various characters as it takes little time and generates ISK everyday.

Next, utilising the BPO's and BPC's I have I've been buying minerals over time to build "stuff".  This "stuff" then generates income when the goods are ready.  When moving the minerals and finished product around this gives you the feeling you're actually inside the universe doing "something".

Missions can be time consuming and very few of us do them for the adventure.  Consider Level 3 security missions as they are fast, generally pay well for what they are, and with nearly zero risk can be used and abused as required.

My alliance has a Jabber service which provides us with information on fleet form ups etc.  I have this running on a second monitor and if a fleet message appears I'll consider what I'm doing at that time, can I reschedule my next three hours (that's the time I budget for the typical fleet), and if so then stop what I'm doing and login.

Then when some days off finally arrive I can sink a few hours into Eve knowing much of the tedious mucking about has been done during the week in those snatched moments.

Proof Reading Inferno

As I'm laid low with the second flu in four weeks I'm finding little time to Eve Online.

The dreams are awesome though!

Today, after last nights incremental patch after Inferno 1.2 CCP posted this on the login page.

DUST514 Comes to New Eden

Meanwhile over in DUST514 land...

On August 21st the next update will be released for CCP's console shooter.  This will start the integration process between it and Eve Online, also DUST514 with moves servers from the current one to Singularity.

Hot Tip # NFI

When shooting the red crosses for love or profit you may, I don't quite know why, decide the locked ships are in the wrong order.

Should this become an overarching desire to spoon your own eyes out CCP have provided us with a solution.

On the image of the hapless bad guys you can left click on the ship image and drag to a new location.

Knowing this makes the game 1.7% better.

Playing With PLEX

In Eve Online CCP have given us the ability to pay for the game with in game currency which is known as ISK.

For an amount of about 500 million ISK you can purchase one PLEX (Pilot License EXtension) which can either be transported in your ship to another location (not a great idea) or used to add 30 days game time to your account.

A 30 day fix

This is awesome!  Well maybe, but it becomes easier as you and your character grow in skill.

On average, rounded up, their is 30.5 days per month. So to make 500 million ISK per month, just to pay for the PLEX you need to make, rounded up, 17 million ISK per day, every day of the month.

Now don't forget this will only pay for the PLEX, not the ships, ammo, etc you'll need.

We have several ways this ISK can be obtained.

Firstly the good old ratting, shooting the red crosses that turn up at asteroid belts in nearly every system of the game.  In high security space this doesn't earn much, however as you progress into more dangerous space the rewards go way up, but so do the risks.

Born to be destroyed

Missions are another way, especially once you reach the level 4 security missions.  You could easily make the ISK here doing mission after mission but saying it's rather repetitive is an understatement.

Incursions, aka hitting the Sansha piggy bank, is also a way to make ISK from NPC's, though for the big dollars a small group, and some decent ships are required.

Manufacturing can also be utilised to try and make some money but you'd better break out the spreadsheet program as competition is fierce, especially near the trade hubs like Jita, Amarr, etc.

The same goes for the good old market games of buying low and selling high.

Good luck beating the market bots.

Mining has been the red headed step child of Eve Online for quite a while now, but with the potential buff incoming with Inferno 1.2 we may see a slight resurgence.  Mining is for those people who think a Morris Minor is just too damn fast and that Sloths are hard to follow.  Some money can be made from mining but inserting a piece of leather between your eye ball and socket (Isaac Newton actually did this for "lols") would be more fun.

Research agents are an old school way to make some ISK, once you have the rep that is.  They will sell you for a very minimal price a type of data core, which changes from agent to agent, which you can then sell on the open market.  The great thing about research agents is how passive they are, you can just drop in once a month, have your way with them, pickup your data cores, leave a small amount of money on the dresser and leave.

Leave a deposit once a month

Once you enter null sec with a decent corporation and space you can then utilise anomalies which ramps up the ISK gathering, though as you're in null sec your risks are higher also.

I'll tell you about the time I had a 100 million battlecruiser destroyed on everyday of one week.

Eventually...when I'm done with therapy.

Are their other ways to make ISK in Eve Online?

Sure. Probably.

However the above is some of the more accessible ways for a character either solo or in a corp.  Some other methods are for corp or alliance wealth creation which will be out of your reach for quite a while.

Hanger Acid Trip

For some reason that's not worth spending the time on Team Fortress 2 and Eve Online sometimes don't like each other on this computer.

So occasionally I see something like this on the left, some sort of bad acid trip.

Typically a restart of Eve Online will fix the issue, much less often I have to restart the computer.

I had to laugh at the absurdity of it though.

Changing Faces and Inferno Post Mortem

Over the time I've been playing Eve Online I have added various in game characters to my watch list for a variety of reasons.  This has now reached a few hundred in size but a little while ago I noticed that while my watch list was large the number of them that actually logged at any one time was less than a dozen.

Now this concerned me at the time but once you realise some of those would have been trials that didn't work out, temporary names for a number of uses etc, it still leaves quite a number who should be in the game but are not.

However this doesn't effect me directly as these people were at arms length and the vast majority wouldn't know me or that I'd watch listed them.

Over the past, lets say couple of months, a more disturbing trend has emerged closer to home.

Various members who have been in the corporation I am a part of are now leaving the game.  It seems at the moment that barely a day goes by that I don't see a message in corp mail that essentially says:

"It's not you it's me but with luck I'll be back in the future however I don't want to sit idle in the corp and screw up the figures."

All it needs a "Dear John" at the beginning to make it complete.

Do I think Eve Online is stagnant at the moment?

Yes I do, but Eve is a quite unique game and my experience is many people don't quit, they just take a break.

I'm probably atypical anyway as I'm fairly happy just to exist in the Eve Online universe doing the equivalent of the Lave to Diso run with a cargo hold full of Narcotics or shooting Thargoids.

The upcoming update on the 8th of August for Inferno 1.2 doesn't look like it will add much.

The visual changes to some ships will please some and annoy others so no real change there.

The added informative instructions will help almost nobody already in the game as that's a feature that helps the very new player just starting out.

Finally the mining changes may give some of the game back to those who enjoy mining but it could just as easily reinvigorate the "Goons" to attack miners in high security space as some sort of lesson.

Trying not to end this on a bad note I'll mention what has been done well in recent times.

The missile visual update is quite cool.  Somehow it's a graphics update which adds much to the game.

The cheap clothing is also a step in the right direction, although I've yet to spend any AURUM as without Walking In Stations what's the point?

Finally we have the new inventory.  Initially I was ... not a fan but with use, and some updates from CCP I've turned around somewhat.  It is still too slow, but much better than it was.

I find myself wondering about the next expansion, even though the current one hasn't rolled out completely yet.  It would have to add something new rather than changing an existing feature.

It could be a long six months.

Fragmented Conversations

I stumbled across part of a conversation while traversing the space lanes between...

Chertjaka

Crotaly

Chertjaka - That I do - is authorized rules of the game, re-read once again rules.

Crotaly - need to remind you that stealing is a very bad thing?

Chertjaka - also that further? and you will hang?

Chertjaka - You already calmed down?  The continue further the mission... I was tired to wait.

Chertjaka - Good luck! Though you also are brought badly up, but I wish it to you

All the conversation I saw, but all it needs is a "Someone set us up the bomb" and it would be complete.

Rule Number One

Every time I forget rule number one I'm reminded why I made that rule.

Rule Number One is never join a DBRB aka "Boat" fleet.

Why?

After joining the fleet, realising it's a "Boat" fleet, but then justifying the decision by the fact I've not been in any fleet for about a month I then join comms.

To be then assailed for the better part of an hour of "Boats" many phobia and -ism's while sustaining his ability to spew this verbal toxin while also not shutting up, or even taking a breath.

It is very similar to three hours of bad Adam Sandler humour at a machine gun rate.

Thinking the fleet was going to be a blue ball and considering bailing we finally jump via the Titan, do another jump after a Titan jumped to the wrong location, and, some normal gate jumping.

It was during this normal gate jumping my game didn't load a new system and I had to exit game, rejoin and try to catch up.

Upon login I find myself about 20kms away from a red stabber and something else similar, but they have better things to do.  Which is good as my Drake was feeling pretty alone at that stage.

Finally catch up with the fleet, we find the enemy fleet after some more waiting and go to work.

Pretty soon things start going wrong.  We are losing ships, we are mostly a battlecruiser fleet with logi, quite steadily.

Every time anybody is destroyed DBRB abuses them for being out of place or not calling for logi.

Our fleet is being chewed up.

My turn arrives to be targetted, I call for logi, which seems to do nothing, shield gone, armour gone, hull gone, I warp the pod away.

By this stage DBRB is no longer abusing those who die but the fleet is going very wrong, in fact we've lost but the FC doesn't realise it yet.

I start pod flying for home while listening to voice chat for a short time and also reading the fleet channel.

It is possible the game was de-synched and that is why we did so badly but more likely they had a better fleet with a better leader and they won the day.

This Drake I had owned for only a matter of hours.

I should have heeded the Rule, not even in desperation should you ever join a DBRB fleet.

It's not worth it.

Fever Posting

I must give thanks to one or more of my fellow travellers who passed on their flu to be loved and cared for by my internal organs.

Much love.

One of the weird things about Eve and logging in again after a couple of weeks was it tried to play the introduction video and also the pre-entered login information was gone.

Passive aggressive way to say I've been gone too long?

The in game music (Eve has sound?) has also been switched on, switched it off.

On the Linux box all of the above happened (well not the flu part) but the most surprising one was the Jukebox which in the past has crashed the game nine times out of ten.

It was also switched off again.

In the actual game not much has changed, it's only been two weeks after all, but it seems the Minmater ships have lost their rust.

They appear more golden now which I suppose fits their role as the slaves of the Amarr, but Minmater without the rust is like Mittens without the huge ego, thousands of retarded followers and a carefully built web of lies.

It just doesn't fit.

Lastly while cruising the CCP forums I came across this gem, while funny now it was probably full of drama at the time.

He Returns!

I'm back! Had a great time out the back of beyond where even basic internet is a rare rare thing.

Logged in to find the corp has moved to the next war zone, not terribly surprising considering the previous pace of deployment.

CCP have made some more changes to various aspects of the game which I'll explore over the next few days but the most obvious one is to the "new" inventory to make it faster, easier to use etc.

This of course is akin to polishing a turd but to be fair that "turd" is much shinier than it was at introduction.

Just a quick post for now as I catch up with the modern world, more later.

Electric Yak

Holy snapping duck crap the Linux Inferno post has gone gang busters!

Seems a pity that I've been busy to try and make the time to get away from it all for a while.

If Mongolia has internet you may get some posts from there.

Or maybe not.

Until early July!

Increasing DUST

While I'm pretty meh about Eve at the moment, both due to a slow down in game due in part to others playing D3 and my increased work commitments, I had another look at one of the DUST514 sites.

http://www.dust514.org/home/item/dust-514-welcome-to-new-eden-trailer

At that link is a video explaining various parts of DUST514 and how it exists in the Eve Online universe.

Also, if it is to be believed, a release date of June 30 (I assume in 2012 but...you know...CCP) so finally we can see if the masses will flock to the Icelandic creation.

Cess Pool Inferno

So yeah that happened.

Now we have the Inferno expansion update.

This has been a staggered release and as such we've already seen some features like the Effects Bar.

Today we see the true horror unleashed upon us.

Not wanting to mince words so here goes.

The new inventory system is a fucking disaster, I've shitted out more useful things!

CCP if you wanted to design a way for us to waste time in game you couldn't have done a better job.

In addition where has my ships window gone!  It's gone!!

Now they are part of the super retarded new inventory system, finding the ship I want in the long long list of the others is a nightmare right up there with people thinking One Direction isn't a joke band.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

Bugs?  Oh yes we have bugs.

Witness the splendor that is below.

Corp members showing to be in local, in corp chat, but no corp members actually online!

Or are they?

WHO KNOWS!!! Who the hell knows.

Forget the rest of this screw up, Inferno will forever be known as the New Inventory update.

The Linux Inferno

As you may know from previous posts I use a flavour of Linux to run Eve Online about half the time.

However for quite some time CCP have not been officially supporting Eve Online on Linux so it came as quite a surprise when CCP Snorlax appeared in the CCP wasteland that is the Linux part of the forums.

"This seems to be an issue in how Python under Wine deals with file descriptors - opening a file with os.open and closing it with os.close causes this error.

The Python source code has a comment indicating that this is handled in a hacky way, using internal structures of the Microsoft CRT.

I'll see if I can achieve the same thing in a different way, but I don't have a way to test under Linux, nor should I technically be spending time on this, this being an unsupported platform and all. Still, I don't like seeing EVE crashing.

Hopefully this gives Wine developers a clue, nonetheless."

Since Crucible and now also with the beginning of the Inferno update, running Eve Online with Wine and Linux has been more "interesting" than previously.

The latest issue seems to be displaying the T3 ships like the Tengu etc, whenever they appear on grid or even if you view their model in game Eve Online will crash.

A solution exists, and is mentioned in the forum post I linked, but it's ugly.

I have every belief the Eve Online Linux community will come up with a better solution given enough time, hopefully before the next update breaks something else.

It is nice though that CCP, at the very least CCP Snorlax, hasn't abandoned the Linux community completely.

Edit: This is post 300 for the blog.  Cake and reminiscing to follow.

Edit Edit:  If the python error appears when trying to run either the Launcher or Eve Online then use Wine config and change msvcr80 and msvcr90 from Builtin then Native to Native then Builtin.

Some experimentation may be required but if it works one way for the Launcher then you'll need to reverse those settings for Eve Online.

Worked for me, hopefully it will for you.

Rough Notes from MC6-5J Turkey Shoot

As promised previously here is the rough notes from the MC6-5J Turkey Shoot.

-------------

Local at 559.
Sitting on Titan.
Two fleets - Mael and Drake.
Red fleets expected 200+.
Reinforced or killed tower and modules over the past few hours.
Ran into T3 gang who mostly ran - killed a few.
Still waiting - tension.
Graphics to minimum - brackets off.
An hour until DT - hope DT is short.
After DT action is expected to be long.
Hurry up and wait.
On comms - reds have 17 Titans plus support.
So they say.
Drake fleet left system. (I'm in a Mael at this stage)
Target system has 750 at the moment.
Still waiting on Titan - local at 425.
We swap Mael's for Drakes & still waiting on Titan.
TiDi (Time Dilation) at 30% - slowly recovering.
20 minutes to DT - finally Titan bridged!
Another Titan - trying to hustle.
I spot "Mr Primary" - a lone Mael in our Drake fleet.
Titan bridged again - TiDi at 50%.
909 in local - No TiDi as yet.
Some guy tries to take a "run up" at the POS shields to get through.
Warping in!
Warp away! Align back!
Waiting again.
Tried to engage fleet - range issues.
Was able to take out a couple but nothing decisive.
Past DT sounds like it'll be a FFA (Free For All).
Other Drake fleet was being bombed as DT hit.
No TiDi during big fight but client slow.
Not unusable but approaching that.
Waiting for end of DT to try and login together.
FC (Fleet Commander) not sure how agro mechanics work across a DT.

DT over.

We login En Masse - they don't.
Quickly form fleet and anchor on FC.
We take them out one by one as they login. (I ended up with 75 kills for this engagement, 95% of that was ships)
Local suggests we are DDOS'ing their comms.
Many of their ships are dying alone.
The reds try some sporadic bomb runs with little effect.
Spamming the scanners to find who the next victim will be.
No TiDi at the moment - none noticed since DT - 475 in local.
Moved to test POS - putting into reinforced.
Only six hour timer! (On the POS)
Back to turkey shoot site.
Our orbiting Drake swarm reminds me of the hunter killer robots in a Matrix movie.
Shot on other POS.
Warped to enemy fleet.
They are close!
Name - target - guns - dead - next!
This goes on.
I'm hit! Call for reps - get some.
Enemy Titans in the distance - ominous.
I don't know how many enemy ships I've destroyed.
Had to remove corpses from the overview.
Bad guys melt away - we hold the field.

Safe at POS in system for quick BIO which I use for Scotch Whisky.
One warp in before was almost a disaster as their bombers were close.
Switched off MWD as bombs approached.
Took half shield damage.
But safe now.
Reinforcements!
FC says he hasn't slept in 24-36 hours.
Holding at POS.
700 in local - no TiDi.
Fighting - shooting T1 after T1
Suddenly Titans! - numerous - going for bumps.
Targetting - shooting!
They move inside shields and enemy cynoing out.
FC says three tech moons taken today.
672 in system - no TiDi - 12 to 15 FPS.
Shooting POS into reinforced - done.
What's next in this epic night?
It's over - heading home!
TiDi warping/jumping home - molasses - but good.
TiDi at 30% - slow!

Quote for the night, "Drake fleet is Darwin fleet.  Those at the back die!"

Expensive Mistakes

I don't usually post kill mails as one is more or less like the rest.

Occasionally though we generate a kill mail from some poor victim that leaves the head scratching for days afterwards.

To set the scene.

We have a gate camp that's been operating for a while at a known camp spot, so its existence should be well known.

At this camp our small fleet kills the usual this or that as they try their luck at our gate.

Then our scout in the next system reports a lone Drake has approached the gate, jumped and a second scout reports he's in warp to us.

Our bubble goes up and he lands short of the gate.

The Drake tries to approach the gate at high speed but a pro bump from yours truly stops him in his tracks.

He then decides to target and start shooting at me of all ships, I was in a Tornado, but he wasn't doing much damage.

His ship is destroyed shortly followed by his pod.

Firstly to look at his ship fitting.

http://kb.pkme.com.au/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=20320

No drones for a start, light missiles and the mid slots are messy.

His setup is designed to attack small ships, not large ones and certainly not a nine man fleet.

If he had a more normal setup would his ship have survived?

No.

Secondly we have a look at the pod.

http://kb.pkme.com.au/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=20319

As you can see the pod is one of the more expensive ones I've seen recently, our kill board shows the value at 1.05 billion ISK.

Certainly the implants he had fitted did him no favours, though once again versus our fleet a fitted or an empty head would not have changed the outcome.

According to local chat, before we podded him, he said it was his first time in null sec.

This much is obvious as he entered null sec solo, in a poorly fitted ship, a very expensive head, and no experience in avoiding gate camps.

His mistake was made when he undocked, it just took a while to reveal itself.

Edit: 17/10/12 - The killboard this linked to died, and the new killboard uses a different numbering system.  I've looked through it but cannot find the kills this post is referring to.  So you'll just have to imagine some terrible Drake fit from my description, and implants worth about 1.05 billion ISK at about April 2012.

LEGO Rifter!

Who doesn't like LEGO?

A fellow named Czar has designed a Rifter which could be made into a proper LEGO production item if you vote for it at the below link.

I think it's cool and have voted.

Get voting!

Quote from Dev Forum post:

"Rifters are pretty serious business in EVE Online and have become equally serious business for Czar who has created an amazing recreation of the Rifter using LEGO which was displayed during Fanfest 2012. We are over half way to getting a review from Lego and need you guys to visit the Rifter page and lend your support.

Have you clicked and supported the project? Nice work, now read on.

Czar is also looking for your favorite frigate in EVE and will start a separate project to recreate its likeness in LEGO form. Submissions will end on Friday, April 27. We will be holding a similar poll on the EVE Online Facebook and Twitter pages.

Please reply to this thread with your frigate of choice from each of the factions as follows:

Amarr:
Caldari:
Gallente:

In the coming weeks we intend to have a second poll which will look at your favorite ship overall from all ship classes. Please note that Minmatar is not an option in this poll as the LEGO Rifter already exists."

Updated the Shiny

Recently CCP offered some Nvidia display cards for Eve Online PLEX.

This was generally well received by the residents of New Eden and the available batch of cards was sold out in less than two minutes.

My ISK is tied up at the moment but it made me think about my own display card, and how old it was.

The card was a 8800GTS 320Mb PCI-E which was about four years old.

For Eve Online it's not too bad, in space it was mostly fine, but for the Captains Quarters (CQ) it was woeful, not that I use the CQ anymore.

The clincher was when I searched for the card on Ebay and found that on a good day with a trailing wind it's probably worth $50.

Time to get a new card then.

The cards that were on offer from CCP are the Nvidia 560 models, also during a recent Nvidia Eve Online technology demonstration they mentioned the 560 is the most used card in Eve Online.

I went searching for this card and found some Gigabyte 560 Ti 1Gb PCI-E cards for a good price, bought one and two days later it arrived.

Installation is quite straight forward as it was simply a case of remove the old card and insert the new as my PSU and display card power cables are compatible.

Testing!

In Eve Online the difference is noticeable, for example I can now run all settings at High, and the frame rate is also consistantly higher than before.  I tried out the CQ to see what the difference is, the frame rate is much higher than before but well below that of being in space, I switched off the CQ again.

I'm not sure how it will go in major fleet battles as client lag can also be caused by non-display card issues, but even on the normal low graphics settings across the board which are typical for the big fights I'm hoping for an improvement.

Time will tell but at the moment I'm very happy with it.

MC6-5J Turkey Shoot

With a bang, not a whimper, our latest campaign is over.

The day was already a long one for me, I almost logged after being blue balled for most of that time, but decided to give one more fleet a go.

Glad I did.

Our fleet eventually ended up in MC6-5J about half an hour away from Down Time.

We had at least two fleets, they had at least one.

The fleets met for some glancing blows before down time, but it rapidly approached and with my Drake desperately firing missiles at an enemy Phobos the screen goes black.

Down Time.

A quick bio, grab some Scotch Whisky and wait.

The Fleet Commander (FC) is on comms describing the process we'll take after Down Time is over.  Essentially login together, fleet up, anchor on the FC and deal with the situation from there.

Down time ended, we logged in, did the above, the enemy didn't.

Our fleets swelled rapidly, but the reds only logged in with ones and twos, which of course warped into our midst and were destroyed.

This went on for quite a while, our pack of Drakes cruising around and playing "Whack a Mole" on the often lone reds that would appear from their DT slumber.

After some time this slowed down so we went looking for more reds in system, which we found, engaged and mostly destroyed.

Conversely our losses were very light, I was targetted a few times but our logistics were on the ball and I managed to survive the whole fight.

For the night my ship kills were over seventy in a battle which raged across a DT and was quite fluid after that for a couple of hours.

Very enjoyable.

I have some raw action notes I made during the battle I'll type up and make available in the near future.

Edit: Here they are!

The Amarr Shuttle T3

Well this is a bit weird, it appears to be a fan video made using textures and sounds from Eve Online.

At first I thought it was an April Fools video from CCP themselves, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The graphics and combat sequences are pretty good, I would like to see him do some more, but perhaps keeping it more true to the game.

Anyway, enjoy!

Penny Arcade! Again!

CCP CEO Hilmar practising Vienna from Ultravox on an Air Piano
Penny Arcade have posted another article about Fanfest 2012, DUST514, Eve Online and some of the issues over the past year or so.

http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/fanfest-feature

I find it interesting that now is the time CCP and Eve Online are being focussed upon in the more main stream press, certainly the more cynical part of me thinks this is part of a marketing strategy by CCP, not necessarily a bad thing.  What seems to have been the catalyst is the impending release of DUST514 as the masses should be able to connect more readily to the CCP shooter if they haven't already with Eve Online.

A quote from the PA article:

"Dust represents a huge shift for a company that’s dependent on a hardcore PC game. The biggest change is the platform: Dust 514, for the time being, is a PlayStation 3 exclusive. “I think if you were to put it on PC we would have brought with us all the complexity of EVE into a shooter-style, and we would have ended up with something like an Excel shooter,” Pétursson said, poking fun at people who characterize EVE Online as being a game about flying spreadsheets. “It has been really helpful to make it for consoles, to make sure it is simple and intuitive and all the sort of rules and expectations that a console product has have been helpful to make sure when you play it, you think this is not difficult to get into."

With luck DUST514 will be successful, perhaps because it isn't just another generic first person shooter, and this will also have some bleed across to Eve Online.

However the success of DUST514 may have a cloud on the horizon with the news Sony's new Playstation will be released before December 2013, and will not be backward compatible.

I'm sure CCP are aware of this but the potential to shorten the life of DUST514 is certainly there if this news turns out to be true.

Penny Arcade Visited Fanfest 2012

Penny Arcade, those guys who started with a web comic and now seem to be astride the internet in an almost not conquering way, sent a reporter to Fanfest 2012.

Yes THAT Fanfest 2012.

Link is here.

Quote!

"which is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone use “4 a.m.” as a verb"

The article was posted after "The Mittens Incident" blew up but it's certainly mentioned in the comments.

More people find out about Eve Online at exactly the wrong time.

Or the correct time, which may or may not be the right time.

Mittens Receives Penalty

Just when I was thinking the "Mittens" situation was going to be swept under the rug CCP have released this statement.

Quoted below.

"As some of you might have heard, one of the Alliance leaders speaking at the Alliance Panel during EVE Fanfest 2012 breached our EULA/TOS with some ill-advised remarks about a fellow EVE player. It goes without saying that CCP deeply regrets this incident and will work towards reducing any possibility of this happening again in the future.

CCP requested that all panel PowerPoint presentations and discussion topics be handed in beforehand for approval. Regrettably, the offending comments were made during an unscripted Q&A session after the main presentations.

Following a thorough internal review CCP has decided to respond to this clear violation of our Terms of Service and wholly inappropriate use of the Alliance Panel. According to our existing policies, we have issued a 30 day ban from EVE Online to the panel speaker.

The policy of CCP is not to publicly discuss warnings and bans on an individual basis. This situation is entirely unique because the panel was displayed via CCP’s Fanfest video stream component, a platform analogous to our forums. As a result we have published this statement due to the special circumstances involved. However, our policy remains that we will not publicly discuss warnings and bans.

The panelist has subsequently posted a public apology as well as a private apology to the victim of his attack. He has also resigned from his position as Chairman of CSM 6 and has forfeited his right to serve on CSM 7. As per our policies, this candidate may be eligible to run at a later date subject to candidacy review.

The Council of Stellar Management is a democratically elected council that represents the players of EVE Online. Although council members may represent the players in any manner they choose, being a council member does not permit actions or playstyles that violate our policies."

So a thirty day ban, removal from CSM6 and he cannot now serve on CSM7.

The ban doesn't mean much as he and other goon leadership can control the minions via jabber or any number of other methods.

Removal from CSM6 is pretty tame as that was almost over anyway.

However the ban from CSM7 is probably the major penalty, especially considering the amount of goon drones that voted for him in comparison to the other candidates.

A brave move by CCP which will no doubt highly annoy the most vocal, if not the largest, power base in Eve Online.

I expect the next twelve months will be full of goon and goon proxies complaining long and loud that CSM7 doesn't represent Eve Online gamers and has no mandate.

They certainly know who to blame about that.

HINT - It's not CCP.

Mittens Headshots Self!

As mentioned here almost a year ago I've been waiting for Mittens, aka "The Mittani" to screw up and destroy his position on the CSM and in Eve Online.

It looks like it may have happened.

At Fanfest 2012 The Mittani allegedly said,

"Incidentally, if you want to make the guy kill himself, his name is XXXXX"

Obviously this is a step too far and I cannot see how CCP can continue his involvement as a member, or indeed the Chairman, of the CSM.

His future in Eve Online as "The Mittani" may also be in jeopardy.

More details on the story can be found here.

"CCP has allegedly launched an internal investigation and public pressure is mounting with dozens of threads on the forums and stories by Massively, Euro Gamer, Develop, The Escapist, Edge online and other sites around the web:"

#1 The Escapist Magazine~

#2 Massively

#3 Develop-Online

#4 eurogamer

#5 edge-online

Should his character be removed from the game for EULA violations he will not stay away for long as his re-entry via an alt is virtually assured.

A small chance exists that he'll demand all Goons leave the game or perform some sort of protest, probably in Jita, to demand he stays as Chairman and/or in the game.

Interesting times ahead!

Update #1 - The monument at Jita 4-4 is currently being shot by what seems to be pro-Mittani supporters, anti-Mittani supporters and others who just like being in a group.  The reasons behind shooting the memorial are not clear but the structure seems to be the focus point of late should any grievances arise in the Eve Online universe.

Update #2 - Goonswarm pilots have been mobilised to suicide gank some of the more expensive ships currently shooting the memorial.
