End Of 2012

So that's another year in Eve Online is almost done.

Taking a break for a week or so.

In game and out.

Edit - Introducing a posting schedule and some more fiction in the New Year which fills me quite full of terror.

Mystery Late DT

On the 20th CCP pushed Downtime (DT) back by an hour after cancelling the first attempt the night before.

This coincided with the second round of Christmas gifts which seemed to consist of a less common ship, some random stuff and a few playing cards.

Sort of interesting I guess.

Getting back to the late DT.  No real explanation has been given for the new time after all these years but the hope, most probably a very faint hope, that DT will be moved away from my prime time.

NIMBY I suppose.

One more gift date is incoming, late in the month.

It's better than nothing.

Almost But Not Quite

A little thrill of excitement pulsed through my core as CCP announced tonights Downtime (DT) would be delayed by an hour but not go longer than the typical half hour.

Which these days is often less than ten minutes anyway.

DT lands right in the middle of our prime gaming time zone in the land "Down Under".

We are the land of "Shrimp on the Barbie".

Well it's actually Prawns and it only started becoming common after the Paul Hogan advert from many years ago.

We also "drink" Fosters beer.

Well ... no.  This is another advertising thing.  We don't drink Fosters.  I don't know anybody who drinks Fosters.  Fosters is something we make the rest of the world drink after we've filtered it through Wombats (interesting fact, they have cubic poo), and dribbled it into cans to export to the world.

Mind you I live in a state where they thought the word "Beer" would be too much of a stretch for the average drinker and decided that "XXXX" would make more sense.

They were totally right.

However, and trying desperately to arrive back in topic here, I decided to visit the Eve Online web site and sure enough...

"Due to database issues experienced today on the 18th of December, we will not be pushing the downtime back by one hour on Wednesday the 19th of December.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding."

Aaaargh CCP why do you hate Australians so?

Push it back by a few hours permanantly, or even into the Kiwi timezone, they only have about a half dozen people and a billion sheep, we they won't care!

December Update

It's difficult to know what to post about at the moment.

The latest patch update expansion (Retribution) seems to have been a success, especially the bounty system.

War declarations have been massaged to stop the eternal wars, new ships are now available with names that take some getting used to when seen in the overview.

Downtime (DT) is still annoying, especially the almost nightly long DT's that followed Retribution, as it impacted heavily on my prime time zone for internet space ships.

Ganking still seems to be happening, neutral repping the same.

The freezing in carbonite (mixing franchises for the twitches) of Walking In Stations is rather depressing, mostly as this will miss targeting a brand new Eve Online audience.  It would have also been cool to stand around with the corp mates while chatting, but that doesn't actually add much to the game play.

Planetside 2 has stolen the thunder of DUST514, both on the SONY console regrettably.  With the current glut of console shooters, Planetside 2 out dusting DUST514 with the kiddies I'm struggling to see how DUST514 it will be relevant upon eventual release.

I would like to be proven wrong but I think DUST514's life will be short and ugly.

Not forgetting the new consoles are due out in 2013 which given the pace of the DUST514 release schedule means the new SONY console will be out several years before a general non-beta DUST514 release.

Probably joking.

Might not be.

My characters are healthy, ie. they all have a task and are doing it well enough.

The corporation is also healthy, as is the alliance.

We are changing alliances though, going back to one we were in a while ago.

Checking out the velvet glove of a previous hot girlfriend as it were.

Hoping she hasn't had too many kids yet.

It should be a good move, I hope it is.

I found something to write about after all.

Go me.

MMO's Die

All MMO's will die, eventually.

It is most likely that one day Eve Online will be switched off and "die".

This can be a sad and sometimes traumatic event for the people still enjoying themselves in the virtual world they've made their own.

Recently GameSpy was bought by a company called Glu who have then proceeded to switch off the multi player aspect of numerous games.

Their facebook page seems to be never ending vertical misery and rage.

With luck this fate will not befall Eve Online, I don't think it will in the short to medium term.  DUST514 I'm not so sure about.  I hope I'm not longer involved in the struggles of New Eden when the seemingly inevitable shutdown happens, many years in the future.

So why bother now?

It's an enjoyable way to pass the time that far surpasses many of the other options available.

The King may eventually die but long live the King!

WiS is Dead

CCP seem to have confirmed Walking In Stations is now dead in the water with no rescue and resuscitation likely in the foreseeable future.

Here and here.

While it's a shame, the reasons are sound however it will make gathering new players more difficult if "internet spaceships" are not their primary interest.

I wouldn't expect this feature to be available for at least two years, four years wouldn't surprise me either.

So don't hold your breath.
